What is a Deacon?

The role of a deacon in the Presbyterian Church is one of great importance. It is perhaps the most difficult as well as the most rewarding position one can hold in the life of the church. Our Book of Order says this about deacons:

"The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office. It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith."

At Eastminster, the most important role of a deacon is in maintaining contact with a segment of the church family who has been entrusted to their care. This means being available at important times in their life - good and bad - to show the love of God and the love of your church family. The list below shows our deacons and the members who have been assigned to their care. Please don't hesitate to contact your deacon with your questions, concerns, joys, and sorrows.

The Deacons are also responsible for the van ministry that ensures those with special needs or without a regular mode of transportation are provided with a ride both to and from church on Sunday mornings.

The Board of Deacons are also a tool of benevolence for the Eastminster congregation, ministering to the poor and needy through such programs as the Good Samaritan Fund, volunteering at local shelters, and through their annual Christmas Basket program.

If you wish to contact a deacon, or are interested in helping with the van or other benevolent ministry, please contact the church.
